Fall mornings and Matthew 22
November 7, 2008
I’m up kind of early for a Friday. Adam couldn’t find his work shirt this morning, so I woke up to the dresser drawers opening and closing. I think the dryer ate his shirt. It’s in the magical world where all the socks go. It’s probably king there by now because shirts are more powerful than socks.
I’m enjoying this cool weather. It feels like fall! I love waking up in the morning and just laying there buried under blankets. It really makes me want to move to CT. I’m want to see some fall colors right now. Hopefully next weekend we will see some wonderful fall landscapes. I’m so looking forward to getting away with my husband for a few days and SLO is one of my favorite places in the world. I guess I’m still kind of dreamy this morning……. Soon enough my feet will hit the ground again. But for now, I’m enjoying the clouds.
We started a very small portion of our Christmas shopping last night. I can’t believe it’s already that time of year! Found some steals at Pier 1 and we still have a gift card there from our wedding. Score!
I’ve been reading through Matthew for the past week or so. Yesterday, I was reading Matthew 21-22. Chapter 22 pretty much just goes back and forth between the Pharisees and the Sadducees trying to “entangle” Jesus with their profound (sense the sarcasm?) questions. So, I’m picturing all this in my mind. The Pharisees and Sadducees all huddled up, trying to think of questions (questions of man) that will trip Jesus up (God in the flesh). I can imagine their pride in thinking, yes, that questions going to do it, Jesus won’t know what hit him. We’re so going to get him. So, they fired their questions…. Here is there response to Jesus’ answer in verse 22 “When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.” Here is the response to Jesus’ answer in verse 33 “And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.” So then, in verse 34-35 we see that the Pharisees couldn’t believe that Christ had silenced the Sadducees, so they gathered together and a Lawyer decided to test Jesus. Jesus responded to his question, kicking booty once again. Now here is the part I am wanting to get to. In verse 42 Jesus asks them a question. Here is their response (verse 46) “And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him more questions.” I love how the message puts it “That stumped them, literalists that they were. Unwilling to risk losing face again in one of these public verbal exchanges, they quit asking questions for good.”
Part of me has always wondered, did the Pharisees and Sadducees really not believe he was the Christ? Even after these types of events? I find that hard to believe. I think they knew. Or were they so prideful in their position among people that they never really did desire for the Christ to come anyway. They were content and happy being above the people and regarded in such a manner. Jesus came and started to unravel their pride. I just don’t think they could handle it. Instead of being humbled in awe of Jesus, they were bitter. It just got me thinking……
